Jack’s or Jack in The Box is a fast-food chain founded in 1951 in San Diego, California. It owns and also franchises restaurants throughout the country. Back in the date, Robert Oscar Peterson, the owner of Jack In the Box already has several successful restaurants that he opened in San Diego in 1941. Specifically, most of the restaurants were drive-in that were named Topsy’s Drive-In at 6270 El Cajon Boulevard. After some time, more Topsy’s Drive-Ins were opened in San Diego but the name was changed to Oscar’s that was Robert’s middle name. In the late 1940s, every Oscar’s Drive-In adopted a unique makeover at the restaurant. There was a circus-like decoration drawing of a starry-eyed clown that was scary for many kids and even adults. This clown statue remained for a long period and people actually got used to this as a tradition of this restaurant. The intercom was the new hype of the 1940s and people actually didn’t use it in any restaurants. In 1947, Peterson tried and got the rights for intercom ordering concept through George Manos who was the first man to own an intercom system drive-up windows. Adding more, George lived in Alaska and no other person was known to use the whole intercom system for a restaurant. It wasn’t long until Peterson changed the first-ever location of Topsy’s name to Jack In The Box. It happened in 1951 and Jack In The Box focused on drive-through service that offered hamburgers to customers. Similarly, this branch used a two-way intercom system being known as the first major chain to use the intercom and only focus on drive-through. Intercom system revolutionized the whole ordering system as it was blazing fast when compared to a traditional drive-up window. Addressing more towards the topic, while one customer was being served at the window around three to four customer’s order could be taken and prepared. This system brings in a new concept of the drive-through restaurant and contributed to a lot of positive changes. When you entered the drive-through a giant clown was projected from the roof and a smaller clown head sat atop the intercom. When you focus a bit more, a sign said, “Pull forward, Jack will speak to you.” This restaurant was known as the “modern food machine” brought into the act by La Jolla who was a master architect. People were attracted to this location as it offers very fast service to everyone.
After some time, all Oscar’s locations were updated to intercom systems. In 1960, Peterson formed Foodmaker, Inc. as a holding company to support Jack In The Box. Around 180 restaurants of Jack In The Box were opened in California and the Southwest. Jack In The Box was known for quality but it’s hard to gain such popularity in a very less. Staff, managers, quality control and food preparation were subjected to strict performance standards and stiff checking to make sure that company doesn’t lose its worth. Most of the companies at that time didn’t concentrate on maintaining the trust they have gained but Jack In The Box did everything just right so that people could actually turn into loyal customers.
In 1968 the holding company Foodmaker, Inc. formed by Peterson was sold to Ralston Purina Company due to some issues. After two years, Foodmaker supported Jack In The Box to gain new heights in marketing by releasing television commercials and franchise locations. After a good lead created by Foodmaker the company just got bolted down during its expansion into East Coast markets. Things didn’t settle until the end of the 1970s as it was noticed that Jack In The Box restaurants was sold in huge amounts. The company went to good ways in the 1980s when Foodmaker decided to alter the restaurant’s marketing strategy by changing the symbol in television commercials. The tagline got changed to “The food is better at the Box” and the company announced that it would no longer compete with the giants McDonald’s to target families and young children. Instead, the company decided to take on the older and “yuppie” customers with upscale menu and series of commercials that compared new items of this restaurant to others. No bigger update on television commercials was seen from about 1985 onwards else minimalistic music change.
The first ever logo had a miniature clown hat with three dots on the upper left corner that dates back to 1978. The clown head was removed in 1980 from the logo to revamp the older version. Now the company is replacing old logos with newer along and updating decoration as well.
